Marathi is very popular with the locals of Chania while its shallow waters make it ideal for families and elderly people. It is one of the few beaches in northern Crete with a southern orientation, which will help your afternoon tan. For the more adventurous, 600 meters off the coast there is a small rocky islet which you can visit, either by swimming or by renting a pedal boat from the beach.
The most important advantage of Marathi is that it almost never raises a wave, even on days with strong winds in western Crete. The beaches face southeast, in the Gulf of Souda and the mountains of Akrotiri protect the area from the north winds. Thus, it is often used as a starting point for sailing tours and fishing trips.
